The ten cent car
Description
An account of the resource
The ten cent car story is one supported by an oral history with John M. Sherwood who was interviewed by William Page Johnson II on June 27, 2008. That video is linked to in the John M. Sherwood oral history item. There are also photographs of the boys with the car, each as a separate item in this exhibit.
The story goes as follows: In 1933 under prohibition, people who drove whisky through Fairfax would be arrested by then sheriff Eppa P. Kirby. Their automobile would be confiscated and then sold at auction. There was a wrecked model T and John Sherwood’s brother (Maurice Sherwood) bid 10 cents on it and then had to move it to the Sherwood’s back yard. They were able to get it into enough of working order that it could be pushed. The boys would ride it up and down the streets of Fairfax on the sidewalks.

Basics of archives and special collections
Description
An account of the resource
Housed in The Fairfax County Public Library's Virginia Room are maps, an extensive photographic archive, local newspapers, rare books, genealogical resources, and manuscript collections. An example of a manuscript collection is the John M. Sherwood Collection. It is a collection of photographs, artifacts, letters, as well as personal and business ephemera that John Sherwood and his family collected during their lifetimes. The materials have been put into archival folders and boxes and are housed in a special climate controlled area in the library to insure that they survive well into the future to provide evidence of a family’s personal and business development in Fairfax, Virginia in the 20th century.
Archival materials are primary sources created in the course of everyday life. They are kept as evidence of actions for future research and study. Materials contained within the John M. Sherwood Collection come in many forms. The following are a few of the most commonly found types of archival materials:
Diaries
Scrapbooks
Letters
Photographs
Ledgers
Audio-Visual materials
Ephemera
Publications
Sheet music
Architectural drawings
Postcards
Realia or artifacts
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Formats of archival materials in the John M. Sherwood Collection:
Photographs - Photographs give us a window into how past generations lived and worked. They bring events that have been previously written about to life. Having information on the photographer and when and where the photograph was taken dramatically increases the context and historical knowledge an image can provide.
Correspondence - Examples of correspondence are letters, telegrams, email messages, and other written communications between people. Depending on the chosen medium, correspondence can be lengthy, or consist of short bursts of information.
Ephemera - Often thrown away after a short period of time, ephemera is matter not intended to be kept, such as ticket stubs, receipts and promotional material.
Publications - Publications such as books, magazines, newspapers, journals and other periodicals are often found in archival collections and can provide an idea of how people were reacting to events in the past.
Realia or artifacts are three-dimensional objects. Clothing, coins, medals, trophies, tools, sculpture and signs are just a few of the things in this category.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Arrangement and Description
Archival materials gain meaning based on arrangement and context. Archivists strive to preserve the original order of materials but sometimes collections arrive at the archive not in any order. It is then the job of the archivist to sort the collection and give it an arrangement. Collections are often arranged chronologically, alphabetically, or by subject. The John M. Sherwood Collection is arranged chronologically and by family member as well as by material type. Archivist may try to keep all of the business papers, letters, and ephemera associated with a person grouped together rather then separate each type of material, but every collection is unique and can be arranged many different ways.
Once a collection is arranged, it must be described. The process of describing a collection includes creating a list or a finding aid detailing the contents. Some collections are quite large and it is therefore impossible to describe every item. It is for this reason that archivists will often describe collections at the folder level or the box level. Once the items have been physically arranged, and listed in a finding aid, it is then possible for the collections to be accessed by researchers, or used in an exhibit like this one.

Kamp Washington
Description
An account of the resource
The Kamp Washington tourist court was located at the intersection of Little River Turnpike and Lee Highway on the edge of the Town of Fairfax.
The property was purchased by Katherine Curry on November 1, 1928. The following year, she went into partnership with Warren Stoner and the couple were soon married.
Vincent Sutphin described the property in his recent book entitled Nothing Remains the Same:
“The camp consisted of some twelve to fifteen one-room frame cabins. Each cabin had a bed, several chairs, a King wood heater stove, and was lighted with a single electric bulb in the center of the room. Toilet facilities with showers, as well as additional cabins, were located in the center of the camp along a graveled driveway. The owner’s Cape Cod frame home was also located along this semi-circle driveway with entrances along Route 236. The owner, Mr. Stoner also ran a small lunchroom with a counter and booths.”
In 1941, the Stoners sold Kamp Washington to Robert Conkle and Douglas Vincent of Falls Church.
Albert Sherwood purchased the tourist court in 1948 and began to redevelop it, slowly tearing down the cabins and replacing them with small brick houses which he rented out. Many were built using leftover construction materials from previous jobs. The property is currently the site of the Office Depot and Washington Sports Club building and parking lots.

Tyson's Corner
Description
An account of the resource
In 1905, John Sherwood's grandparents, Henry and Savilla Myers, purchased property at the intersection of Routes 7 and 123. The area was known then as Tyson’s Crossroads. Over the years the family ran a filling station, repair shop, auto dealership and a general store at the site. As the Tyson’s Corner area developed, most of the original parcel was condemned for the widening of Routes 7 and 123. In the early 1970s, the remainder of the property was leased to the Koons Family for an automobile dealership, which is still there today.

Sherwood's Tourist Home
Description
An account of the resource
When John Sherwood returned home in 1937 from his freshman year at The University of Virginia, his father Albert was just finishing up construction on “the house he had always dreamed of building.” The seven bedroom house sat near the intersection of Lee Highway and Fairfax Boulevard. It featured solid brick construction, a slate roof and a handmade, solid walnut banister made from a tree Albert Sherwood had planted as a young boy. The property also featured.a tennis court, two car garage with an apartment over it, apple trees, a pear orchard, a boxwood court and a vegetable garden.
Albert ran a successful construction company for many years, building private homes and commercial buildings throughout Fairfax and Arlington counties. He built the fire house for the town of Fairfax, homes in Fairfax Heights, Lyon Village in Arlington, homes in the Moore-Oliver subdivision in Fairfax, He was also a director of the National Bank of Fairfax and a member of the Fairfax Town Council for forty years. He served from 1916-1956 and still holds the record for the longest serving councilmember. His wife Annie took care of guests at the tourist home that they ran out of their house.
After Albert and Annie Sherwood died in 1963, the property was sold and “Wild Bill” Patram moved the house down the hill into the adjoining Westmore neighborhood.
